Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(1), 84. Hans Toch comments on Robert Sommer's review (see record 2006-06397-015) of Toch's book Living in Prison: The Ecology of Survival (see record 1979-14053-000). Toch states that he has met very few barriers and almost no hostility in over 20 years of working in prisons. Simultaneously, he suspects that there are some researchers who have encountered suspicion and will continue to experience it. With regard to funding for research in criminal justice, Toch prefers Sommer's earlier (1976) assessment that “the potential for money and services from LEAA has not been realized. The infusion of new money did not have the same stimulus value that it had in mental health, where it brought in new people. Proposals were often considered by committees for their political implications.” (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
