Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 199–200. Reviews the book, Mental Retardation in School and Society by Donald L. MacMillan (1977). The publication of this book is a welcome addition to the field of Mental Retardation. The strengths of this book are many. First, it is both comprehensive and contemporary. Six separate but well-integrated sections deal with definition; causation; assessment; diagnosis and placement, social, personality, and learning characteristics; and education and training. A second decided strength of the book is its readability and lucid style. Additional positive features of the book include case description to illustrate important points and well-chosen photographs, figures, and tables. The major regret one has is that, if changes in the field continue to occur at their present rate, the book will probably be dated in a few years.
