Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 218–219. Reviews the book, Research on Smoking Behavior. National Institute on Drug Abuse Research Monograph 17 by Murray E. Jarvik, Joseph W. Cullen, Ellen R. Gritz, Thomas M. Vogt, and Louis Jolyon West (Eds.) (1977). The book starts out on a refreshing note by showing that it does not suffer from the “myopia Americanus” that has sometimes caused the neglect of the British research on smoking. It reviews the recent work on several fronts. The volume provides a rich mine of research hypotheses that warrants special attention. A few of the papers suffer from the slight obscurity that can result when slides for an oral presentation are used with little modification to provide the basis of the figures for a written text. All in all, it is a remarkably broad book on research on smoking, with articles ranging from an econometric analysis of the cost of smoking to a largely polemic consideration of a ban on all cigarette advertising. This book will help shape research in this area for the next several years. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
