Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 226–227. Reviews the book, Alternatives to Mental Hospital Treatment by Leonard I. Stein and Mary Ann Test (Eds.) (1978). This book contains the carefully edited proceedings of a conference of the same title held at Madison in 1975. The collection of papers addresses the treatment of severe mental disorders in community. While written primarily for those working in the public and community mental health sector with chronic patients, topics are relevant to community mental health in general and program planning and evaluation, and would be a useful supplement for graduate courses in milieu treatment, community psychology, or mental health administration. This book is not missionary in tone. Rather it is an objective statement of the state of the art in community-based treatment. Overall, this book quite successfully provides the most current, comprehensive, and readable overview of the field presently available. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
