Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 251–252. Reviews the book, Helping Relationships: Basic Concepts for the Helping Professions. 2nd ed by Arthur W. Combs, Donald L. Avila, and William W. Purkey (1978). This book, a second edition, summarizes ideas on helping relationships and gives recommendations for helping practice. The text has been condensed and new sections added, including open and closed systems and behavioral contributions. The book has two parts. Basic concepts in part 1 and recommendations on helping processes in part 2. The basic concepts are humanistic, founded upon the perceptual psychology of Snygg and Combs. Part two offers such useful information as how to improve empathy and what acceptance really means. The book is well and simply written, but sometimes the text is too condensed.
