Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 260. Reviews the book, The Supervisor and the Job. 3rd ed by Aaron Q. Sartain and Alton W. Baker (1978). This book is intended for both practicing supervisors and college classes in supervision. Any book that reaches a third edition is obviously successful by commercial standards. A substantial amount of material on management history has been removed, and chapters on the supervisor and civil rights and the supervisor's responsibility for safety have been added. The arrangement of chapters has been totally revised. While the topics to be covered in a book on supervision are fairly well defined, readers can still argue with the authors' choice of studies and references. It is ironic that the authors put down the trait approach to leadership. In spite of these perceived limitations, most of the changes in the new edition are for the better.
