Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 266. Reviews the book, Sport psychology: An analysis of athlete behavior by William F. Straub (Ed.) (1978). As the present anthology testifies, the student of athlete behavior today ranges far from the traditional stamping ground of eye-hand coordination and exercise physiology. The selections are brief and typically informal in tone, perhaps because most of them were originally short speeches or symposium presentations. All in all, the volume provides a readable demonstration that laboratory-based theorizing in the personality-social realm is more than a solipsistic exercise. Theories of performance and group cohesiveness are relevant and useful in the realm of sport, and it is there where many of them may be realistically tested.
