Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(3), 269. Carolyn Wood Sherif responds to Warren Bennis' reply (see record 2006-06403-051) to comments by Shotland (see record 2006-06403-049) and Sherif (see record 2006-06403-050) on Bennis' review (see record 2006-06395-048) of Shotland's book, University Communication Networks: The Small World Method (1976). Sherif states that neither Bennis' review nor this exchange represent “intellectual dissent that promotes progress in understanding. She is also convinced of the sincerity of Bennis'” worst fears“. Bennis's reply states his bias well. What makes for a poor model as reviewer is the pretense that the review, which served as a medium for his own attempt at cleverness, represents scholarly appraisal of the book.
