Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(4), 301. Reviews the book, Ordered Populations by Neil H. Timm. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review and analysis of the state of the art of many ranking and selection procedures developed by statisticians over the past 20 years. This text presents the material in nontechnical terms that require minimal formal training in the theory of statistics. The primary focus of the book is to present solutions to the problem of selecting one best population among several populations. The authors must be commended for putting together a book on the topic of selecting and ordering populations that will be, understandable and usable by most methodologists.
