Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(4), 306–307. Reviews the book, Primary Prevention of Psychopathology, Vol. 2: Environmental Influences by Donald G. Forgays (Ed) (1978). The present volume is the result of the 1976 conference at which the theme selected was the environment, with emphasis on, both those environmental factors that contribute to psychopathology and the environmental interventions that may prevent the development of psychopathology. The proceedings begin with the opening address by Heinz Ansbacher defining positive mental health and appropriately suggesting it as a suitable objective for primary prevention. Part 2 involves research approaches in primary prevention. Part 3 presents theoretical approaches to mental health. The final section provides a summary of the conference.
