Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(4), 315–316. Reviews the book, Children Drawing by Jacqueline Goodnow (1977). This book provides an excellent summary of the authors research and that of her colleagues. Those interested in aesthetic, affective, cultural, or social approaches to children's drawings, or a general review of cognitive approaches, should seek additional works. The author focuses primarily on matters of “syntax” rather than “semantics” in children's drawings. This book is a clearly written summary of an important direction in the study of children's drawings; it frames a series of researchable questions and may well become a classic in the field.
