Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(4), 333. Reviews the book, Self-Perception: The Psychology of Personal Awareness by Chris L. Kleinke (see record 1980-50579-000). The author manages to bring together a myriad of seemingly unrelated topics under the rubric of self-perception. The book includes hundreds of citations of work from nearly every area of social psychology and mentions applications of the research to gambling, pain, love, anxiety, brainwashing, and depression. It is also clearly stated that the book is addressed to three diverse audiences, students of psychology, nonpsychologists, and persons interested in therapeutic applications.
