Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(5), 397–398. Reviews the book, Infancy by Kathryn Sherrod, Peter Vietze, and Steven Friedman (1978). The authors of this Life-Span Human Development series volume undertake the difficult task of synthesizing this work primarily for undergraduates. They employ the familiar “textbook” formula of balancing well-defined jargon and copious detail with charming photographs and pointed comments about “relevance.” The result is a book of very uneven quality. Overall, they set no conceptual path through the topics. Sometimes the sheer quantity of current research seems to determine whether an issue is a mountain or a molehill.
