Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(5), 422–423. Reviews the book, Consciousness and Self-Regulation: Advances in Research and Theory. Vol. 2 edited by Gary E. Schwartz and David Shapiro (1978). The chapters in Volume 2 are even less biological than those in Volume 1, but they continue the dominant somatic theme. In this volume 10 papers are given. The opening chapter is timely and important reading for neuroscientists and psychologists. One of the commonest criticisms of books like this is the lack of integration of the differing viewpoints represented. The present volume is no exception: The editors provide brief summaries of the chapters, but make relatively little effort at comparing and contrasting the orientations of the authors. In sum, this series is of considerable importance for professionals and students in clinical, social, and cognitive psychology. Those with no prior interest in and little exposure to the topics should find the material stimulating. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
