Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(5), 427–428. Reviews the book, Psychopathic Behaviour: Approaches to Research edited by R. D. Hare and D. Schalling (1978). The editors have done an excellent job in compiling well-written, thorough, extensively referenced chapters that reflect several current approaches to theory development and research on psychopathy. On the whole, the research presented is methodologically sound and fairly presented. The amount of data is voluminous. Some of the data are intriguing, especially those concerning the familial and personal histories, the psychophysiology, and the specific social and cognitive characteristics of diagnosed psychopaths. The volume, which brings together research findings from diverse disciplines and diverse theoretical and methodological orientations, helps make this need more apparent.
