Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(5), 432–433. Reviews the book, The First Child and Family Formation edited by Warren B. Miller and Lucile F. Newman (1978). The book makes a little more sense as a compendium of views intended to convey an idea of the range of things that can be subsumed under the topic of first birth and family formation, but here, too, it falls well short of consistent excellence. The worst aspect of the editors synthesizing efforts is their inclusion of selected portions of group discussion relating to various sections.
