Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(5), 433–434. Reviews the book, Crowds and Power by Elias Canetti and Carol Stewart (1978). Published originally in 1960, this impressive volume was translated from the German in 1962 and now appears in a new paperback edition. The book begins with a brilliant taxonomic approach to crowds. There are baiting crowds, flight crowds, prohibition crowds, reversal crowds, and feast crowds. The author's fascination with symbols as integrating anchors is apparent in a brief account of national character. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
