Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 478–479. Reviews the book, Topics in Cognitive Development, Vol. 2: Language and Operational Thought by Barbara Z. Presseisen, David Goldstein, and Marilyn H. Appel (Eds.) (1978). This book is a collection of 12 papers of which four are directed at language and language development, the remainder being divided among “Formal Reasoning,” “Social Cognition,” and “Applied Research”. The papers are, for the most part, quite short, with a range of from 44 to 30 pages of text and a mean of about 13 pages. In sum, the book is a hodgepodge going in many different directions with out going very far in most of them anc without any very clear focus.
