Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 480–481. Reviews the book, A Behavioral Atlas of the Rat Brain by Robert Thompson (1978). This book summarizes much of the author's own research over the past 17 years, during which time he has recorded the behavior changes resulting from a wide variety of experimentally induced lesions in over 1,500 rats. It provides some general guidelines for researchers who are attempting to interpret their own data relative to lesion effects in various brain areas. The book represents a summary of the author's observations of behavioral changes resulting from brain-stem and cortical lesions in the rat.
