Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 491–493. Reviews the books, Recent Advances in the Psychology of Language: Formal and Experimental Approaches by Robin N. Campbell and Philip T. Smith (Eds.) (1978); and Recent Advances in the Psychology of Language: Language Development and Mother-Child Interaction by Robin N. Campbell and Philip T. Smith (Eds.) (1978). The 21 papers collected were those presented to the 1976 Stirling Psychology of Language Conference. Of note several areas stand out. Among these are the areas of speech production, and the psychology of phonology, an area that will probably be unfamiliar to most readers. In addition to the papers mentioned here, many valuable contributions are included that take more conventional approaches to the psychology of language.
