Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 498–499. Reviews the book, Primary Prevention of Psychopathology, Vol. I: The Issues by George W. Albee and Justin M. Joffe (Eds.) (1977). This volume represents the first in a proposed series of conference-based books exploring issues and developments in the primary prevention of psychopathology. The book, as a whole, does a good job of cheering on all researchers and practitioners engaged in primary prevention or life history research in psychopathology. However, in their unbridled enthusiasm, many of the authors discuss only the positives and ignore the difficulties. There are many issues that this book on issues could have discussed but did not. The book will be valuable to anyone just starting to think about primary prevention issues but has much less to offer to those who are well acquainted with the relevant literature.
