Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 499–500. Reviews the book, Social Play in Primates by Euclid O. Smith (Ed.) (1978). This book is a compilation of 11 original articles, many of which were presented at the 1977 national meetings of the Animal Behavior Society at the Pennsylvania State University. The title, however, is extremely misleading. Some of the chapters deal only superficially with social play, and there is even a chapter devoted solely to object play. But the book is clearly a valuable compendium for primatologists and nonprimatologists alike. All in all, this compendium is very useful and one worth owning. There is a lot of information packed between the covers. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
