Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 500. Reviews the book, Four Critical Years: Effects of College on Beliefs, Attitudes, and Knowledge by Alexander W. Astin (1978). This book reports on longitudinal studies involving 200,000 students in 300 institutions. The author wanted to produce a rigorous quantitative study that would bear directly on educational policies. He has succeeded admirably. He offers many practical suggestions for both government officials and those who run the institutions. His major conclusion, however, is pretty grim.
