Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 500–502. Reviews the book, San Francisco Scavengers: Dirty Work and the Pride of Ownership by Stewart E. Perry (1978). This book makes a valuable contribution by reporting on quality of worklife experiments experience in depth. The author became interested in garbage collecting as just one of several occupations assigned to do our society's “dirty work”. The author takes us through the 50 year growth of Sunset Scavenger. In sum, San Francisco Scavengers is a detailed and, welcome case study of alternative work arrangements. Although it fails to include comparative data on the situation in conventional refuse collection agencies, we may look forward to a capable treatment of those data by the same author in a future publication.
