Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 511–512. Reviews the book, Love, Guilt and Reparation & Other Works, 1921-1945 by Melanie Klein (1975). The present book is the third of four volumes constituting the complete works of the author, and covers all of her papers written from 1921–1945. Although the author was originally part of the classical psychoanalytic group, her thinking early on began to deviate from the classical theory in important ways. In contrast to Freud, Klein took a basically androgynous view of early sexual identification, in which both feminine and masculine elements are early incorporated into the psyche of both boys and girls. The extensive explanatory notes at the end of the volume do an excellent job for setting the intellectual context in which each paper was written.
