Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(6), 526–527. Reviews the book, The Evaluation Interview, Rev. 2nd ed by Richard A. Fear (see record 1980-02176-000). This is the best manual I ever used to help interviewers obtain better information from applicants. I opened this book following careful study of Miner and Miner and was disturbed by the author's approach to EEOC guidelines. Some example changes are good while others are questionable. His whole position is ambiguous. He advises that one obey the law but recommends that companies not lower standards appreciably in their search for minority members. The author has an excellent technique for collecting accurate information from applicants, although it is unlikely to improve decision making if one accepts his steps in the selection process.
