Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 551–553. Reviews the book, Cognition and Categorization by Eleanor Rosch and Barbara B. Lloyd (Eds.) (see record 1979-32871-000). This is a book about similarity. A set of 10 essays prepared for a conference, it is, nevertheless, a more cohesive work than many that are written by single authors. In this book, similarity is not allowed to play its familiar roles. It is not allowed to explain anything, is often pushed aside by more precise notions, and is, itself, subjected to intrusive dissection. The sorts of behavior used by authors to define their generic and basic object levels are different, and the difference creates a minor puzzle.
