Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 584–585. Reviews the book, Ego Psychology and Mental Disorder: A Developmental Approach to Psychopathology by David P. Ausubel and Daniel Kirk (1977). This book presents a conceptual framework for ego psychology from a naturalistic, developmental perspective. Authors present a highly systematic and refreshingly original personality theory as a framework on which to establish a developmental basis for psychopathology. The weakest point is seen in the authors' attempt to reorganize psychiatric nomenclature according to stage level conflicts in their developmental model. But authors' laudable attempt to relate ego development to psychopathology is highly thought provoking and stimulating, and leads to a variety of potentially verifiable hypotheses.
