Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 591–592. Reviews the book, Environments and Organizations by Marshall W. Meyer (1978). The aim of this book is to provide a foundation for assessing the full impact of social and political environments on organizations. The book is an outgrowth of some informal seminars held by author and his colleagues on the West Coast beginning in 1974 The result is a book that narrowly covers the field, ignores some areas, and offers nothing really new. But the book totally ignores interorganizational relations and politic; and economic perspectives, all of which are central to the study of organization environments. It is difficult to conceive that a book on environments could ignore these areas. While most of the papers are well written, this book is not a representative statement of the issues in organizational-environmental relations.
