Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 592–593. Reviews the book, Not Quite Like Home: Small Hostels for Alcoholics and Others by Shirley Otto and Jim Orford (1978). Hostels are beginning to draw serious professional attention as objects of research and as bona fide clinical tools, therapeutic as opposed to custodial. This development is the concern of this book. Unfortunately, as the authors point out in their preface, the research conception and project implementation preceded the “state of the art” review. This order of presentation resulted in deficiencies that the authors acknowledged. An explicit theoretical framework would have been helpful in organizing the research.
