Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 594–596. Reviews the books, Wörterbuch zur Psychologie (Dictionary of Psychology). 11th, extensively revised ed by W. D. Fröhlich and James Drever (1978); and Diccionario de psicología (Dictionary of Psychology) by Alberto L. Merani (1977); and Kleines Psychologisches Wörterbuch (Pocketbook Psychological Dictionary). 3rd ed by Christian Michel and Felix Novak (1977). The Frohlich and Drever (F-D) dictionary is a very youthful oldster for generalist audience. Some new entries were introduced and numerous others were revised in the effort to keep step with the advances in knowledge and changes in word usage. The Michel and Novak (M-N) pocketbook shares with F-D a distinction between entries that provide brief definitions of the terms and the ‘main entries“. In contrast to F-D, which cites both German and English publications, M-N provides only references to German publications, in accord with the intended less sophisticated audience. In many ways, Merani's Dictionary is a different breed of cat than F-D and M-N. It is highly idiosyncratic in its ideology, to some extent in the selection of the terms, and in its structure.
