Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 596. Reviews the book, Environmental design evaluation by Arnold Friedmann, Craig Zimring, and Ervin Zube (1978). Written by authors with backgrounds in design, psychology, and landscape architecture, this book provides excellent guidance for those interested in the elusive question of environmental design “evaluation.” The book has some decided advantages: a conceptual framework of the evaluation process the presentation of each evaluation in a standard format; a range of evaluation settings and case studies; and liberal use of visual materials. If there any flaw at all to this volume, it is that we are only given capsule descriptions of each evaluation, although references are provided for the full evaluation report.
