Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(7), 598. Reviews the book, The assertive option: Your rights and responsibilities by Patricia Jakubowski and Arthur J. Lange (1978). This book is a rather complex attempt to teach responsible assertion skills; it not only covers topics generally regarded as relating to assertiveness, but considers broader communication skills as well. The book has several strengths when compared to other guidebooks in the area. It attempts to get away from the idea that assertion is a “gimmick” to use to get one's way and instead focuses on assertion as a genuine form of communication. Because of its complexity and the challenging nature of some of the exercises, it would seem to be more useful in the latter context and could also be used in conjunction with therapy dealing with communication issues.
