Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(8), 663. Reviews the book, Systems and theories of psychology 4th ed. by James P Chaplin and T. S. Krawiec (1979). The aim of this fourth edition is “to treat contemporary systems and theories as evolutionary developments from historical roots.” This edition deals mainly with the “historical roots.” Out of some 1,000 references, only about 2% have appeared since the previous edition was published, and most of those are references to textbooks. Nor does the book tell us much about the historical developments. On the other hand, this edition recognizes the burgeoning importance of developmental psychology, has dropped several theorists who have faded in importance, and has updated some popular topics.
