Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(8), 667–668. Reviews the book, Les cauchemars de I'enfant by Michel Zlotowicz (1978). In order to further the understanding of the psychology of dreams and the psychology of anxiety, the author obtained accounts of 306 nightmares from 257 5-to 9-year-old children. Using these accounts, he did a content analysis that involved classifying the actions undertaken by the nightmare characters, and the typical attributes of the nightmare characters as denned by their interrelationships and by the functions they perform in the nightmare. The author also analyzes the morphology of the nightmare, describing a basic orderly succession of nightmare events when they involve ah aggressor, the variants of the orderly succession, and the consequences of the variants. He finds little evidence for the Freudian interpretation and offers instead alternative interpretations of both dream content and form. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
