Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 689–691. Reviews the book, The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map by John O'Keefe and Lynn Nadel (1978). A large section of the book is devoted to a detailed and comprehensive review of the effects of hippocampal lesions in experimental animals. This review is divided into chapters on exploratory behaviors, discrimination and maze learning, aversively motivated behavior, operant conditioning, reactions to reward change, and maintenance behaviors. Those interested in the behavioral significance of the hippocampus will find much, including a comprehensive review of previous research and a theoretical point of view that should prove heuristic.
