Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 694–695. Reviews the book, Autism: A Reappraisal of Concepts and Treatment edited by Michael Rutter and Eric Schopler (1978). This volume had its beginnings in an international symposium on autism, but it is much more than a collection of papers. The authors intend to provide the reader with a current overview of the state of the art. Diagnosis and definition of autism are discussed first, followed by chapters describing social characteristics, psychological and physiological studies, biological investigations, and family characteristics. Pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and behavioral approaches to treatment are then presented. The most impressive aspect of the volume is the display of critical thinking evident in most of the chapters. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
