Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 700–701. Reviews the book, The Development of Social Understanding. Studies in Social and Cognitive Development, Vol. 1 edited by Joseph Glick and K. Alison Clarke-Stewart (1978). The aim of this book is apparently to expand, and perhaps to redefine completely, the boundaries of the subfield in developmental psychology called social cognition. The author presents a good overview of the research. It also indicates that despite the diversity of topics, there is little variation in methods. The writing is sometimes excessively abstract, confusing rather than clarifying the theoretical framework for the research. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
