Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 711. Reviews the book, Annual Review of the Schizophrenic Syndrome, Vol. 5 edited by Robert Cancro (1978). This is a collection of articles on schizophrenia. The book is organized into nine topical categories such as diagnosis and heoretical considerations, biochemical studies, genetic studies, and family studies. A collection of articles on the topic of schizophrenia is perhaps more useful than the usual edited book because of the great diversity of the field. The overall value of this book, however, may be less than was the case when the series was introduced in 1971. Cancro's volume should weigh its high cost, the fact that most of the articles were previously published, and the current availability of at least one alternative publication that allows a reader to sample the full range of activity of schizophrenia researchers.
