Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 712–713. Reviews the book, Naissance de l'intelligence chez l'enfant Baoulé de Côte d'lvoire by P. R. Dasen, B. Inhelder, M. Lavallee, and J. Retschitzki (1978). This book should be seen within the general context of intercultural research since it focuses upon the question of cultural relativity as opposed to the universality of intellectual development. The major shortcoming of this work is inherent to the topic and is typical of literature on this subject: The observational approach and the descriptive nature of the research make it difficult to isolate intervening factors. The author present interesting research, conducted with detailed precision, that paves the way for further investigation, especially about symbolic and preoperational development.
