Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 720. Reviews the book, Hereditary genius: An inquiry into its laws and consequences by Francis Galton (1978). The author acknowledges ascertainment biases, fertility differentials, birth order, assortative mating, the correlation of mental and physical health, and the importance of adoption designs to untangle genetic and environmental influences. He also has interesting things to say about the great man versus the Zeitgeist theory of scientific discovery and provides the first discussion of the regression toward the mean phenomenon. This book still makes fascinating reading. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
