Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 720. Reviews the book, Mental retardation by Robert B. Edgerton (1976). This brief book is intended as an introduction to mental retardation for laypersons or as supplementary reading in a course such as developmental psychology. Decisions about what to treat in more detail reflect the biases of the author and, predictably, author has stressed sociocultural factors in mental retardation. This makes the book less valuable as an introduction to mental retardation for the parents of retarded children who would be likely to read it, and more valuable as supplementary reading in college courses.
