Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 720–721. Reviews the books, Psychothérapies médicales, tome I: Aspects théoriques, techniques et de formation by Jean Guyotat et al(1978) and Psychothérapies médicales, tome II: Situations de pratique médicale by Jean Guyotat et al (1978). These two volumes represent an impressive collection of papers on attitudes, theories, and techniques of various psychotherapeutic approaches as applied to the practice of medicine. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of current therapeutic intervention are treated in considerable detail. In Volume 1, these various key theoretical positions are presented with a view toward their classification, followed by a consideration of the problems implicit in these approaches and the difficulties of verification of the results of psychotherapeutic interventions within a medical context. Volume 2 presents detailed study of situations wherein a therapeutic intervention has been carried out with adult patients. These are of special importance to all professionals interested in and concerned about the relationship between medicine and psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
