Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(9), 722. Reviews the book, Behavior therapy with hyperactive and learning disabled children edited by Benjamin B. Lahey (1979). This book comprises an excellent collection of reprinted papers on the behavior therapy approach to children labeled as “learning disabled” and “hyperactive.” Lahey, as editor, places the material in both historical and conceptual frameworks. The papers are arranged into three sections evaluating the assessment and treatment procedures of the three paradigmatic approaches of the past 20 years: the disease model; the elimination of incompatible behaviors; and the direct modification of academic, cognitive, and psychological deficits.
