Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1993, Vol 38(11), 1187–1188. Reviews the book, Developmental Behavioral Neuroscience edited by Megan R. Gunnar and Charles A. Nelson (1992). This collection of chapters attempts to cut a broad swath, covering topics as diverse as brain mechanisms of locomotor development and emotional development. Each of the chapters is quite good, covering in some detail the central research issues for its field. Four of the six chapters are directly on target, presenting conceptual framework, methodological approach, and innovative data that attempt to carry out the synthesis of developmental behavioral neuroscience. Vaughn and Kurtzberg are interested in understanding developmental changes in basic sensory and elementary cognitive processing. They have used recording of the evoked response as a measure of brain activity and have developed innovative procedures for locating the neural sources of the generation of both simple and complex evoked responses.
