Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1993, Vol 38(11), 1199–1200. Reviews the book, Advances in School Psychology, Vol. 8 edited by Thomas R. Kratochwill, Stephen N. Elliott, and Maribeth Gettinger (1992). Kratochwill, Elliott, and Gettinger demonstrate their command of and influence on the field of school psychology by selecting timely and important topics. In their overview chapter, as well as previewing the content chapters, the editors provide recommendations to remediate the current shortage of practicing psychologists in the schools. Many of their recommendations are practical. One such recommendation contrasts the impact of training school psychologists at the specialist and doctorate levels. Although their coverage of the level of training debate does not resolve the controversy, their suggestion to reframe the question is fitting.
