Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1993, Vol 38(11), 1234. Reviews the book, Diagnostic Criteria for Functional Psychoses (2nd ed.) by P. Berner, E. Gabriel, H. Katschnig, W. Kieffer, K. Koehler, G. Lenz, D. Nutzinger, H. Schanda, and C. Simhandl (1992). The authors advocate a “polydiagnostic approach” in psychiatric research, in which large groups of patients are evaluated according to alternative sets of diagnostic criteria. To facilitate these endeavors, the authors have provided a volume that presents alternative criteria sets for the “functional psychoses” schizophrenic psychoses, affective psychoses, schizoaffective psychoses, and delusional (paranoid) psychoses.
