Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1993, Vol 38(12), 1304–1306. Reviews the book, Changing Assessments: Alternative Views of Aptitude, Achievement and Instruction edited by Bernard R. Gifford and Mary Catherine O'Connor (see record 1992-98627-000). The purpose of this edited book is to provide a variety of alternative frameworks from which to view the assessment of public school students. It is primarily directed toward policymakers (state legislators and school board members), and it secondarily would be useful for those professionals that advise them (legislative staff, superintendents, and other school administrators). It is meant to provide a broad perspective on the testing movement to those individuals who are in positions to determine the form that movement will take.
