Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1993, Vol 38(12), 1330. Reviews the book, Meeting at the Crossroads by Lyn Mikel Brown and Carol Gilligan (see record 1992-98402-000). Tracing the roots of women's relational experiences and knowledge, Brown and Gilligan's book describes the fading of young girls' voices in personal relationships. The authors explore what they describe as a “relational crisis” in women finding young girls caught in the paradox of sacrificed genuine self-expression for the sake of a more superficial human attachment, a “giving up of relationship for the sake of Relationships.” They locate the creation of this paradox in adolescence, at the juncture, the crossroads, of womanhood and female youth.
