Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1994, Vol 39(1), 80–81. Reviews the book, The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory: A Clinical Research Information Synthesis edited by Robert J. Craig (1993). This book is comprehensive in presenting data pertinent to psychometric and clinical issues concerning the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI). Concerns raised about the original MCMI, which are addressed in this volume, include the significant item overlap across scales, questions regarding the generalizability of the base-rate cutoff scores, and concerns regarding actual congruence with DSM-III diagnoses. This book provides a substantive compendium of data pertinent to the MCMI. Although there are some shortcomings as noted, this volume will be useful to researchers interested in the assessment of personality and psychopathology. It also will be a useful resource for clinicians, whether they already use the MCMI or are considering its use, as it provides data important to the appropriate use and interpretation of this instrument.
